Take Our PollBoston’s plastic bag ordinance went into effect December 14, banning plastic bags at check-out counters across the city. Retailers are now transitioning to paper, compostable or reusable bags that customers can purchase for a minimum of 5 cents. The purpose of the ban is to reduce plastic waste in the oceans and on our city streets. Consumers can avoid the bag charge by bringing their own reusable bag. While most people seem in favor of reducing waste to help the environment, some concerns raised at the December North End / Waterfront Residents’ Association meeting included the burden this puts on consumers, particularly in a city where people walk places so cannot stash a pile of bags in their cars, who may stop in a store unexpectedly and will not have a bag with them. How has the plastic bag ban been going for you? Have you found the transition easy or are you now constantly paying for bags at check-out? March 19 is Saint Joseph’s Day! Devotees will celebrate the Feast of Saint Joseph by attending church services and perhaps enjoying a famous Italian zeppole from one of the North End pastry shops.Saint Joseph Procession through the streets of the North End last July.In both Catholic and Protestant traditions, Joseph is regarded as the patron saint of workers and is associated with various feast days. Pope Pius IX declared him to be both the patron and the protector of the Catholic Church, in addition to his patronages of the sick and of a happy death, due to the belief that he died in the presence of Jesus and Mary. In popular piety, Joseph is regarded as a model for fathers and has also become patron of various dioceses and places.Saint Joseph is honored for saving Sicily from famine in the Middle Ages. According to legend, there was a severe drought at the time, and the people prayed for their patron saint to bring them rain. The rain did come, and the people of Sicily prepared a large banquet for St. Joseph. The fava bean was the crop that saved the population from starvation and is a traditional part of Saint Joseph’s Day altars and traditions.*Advertisement* Many still prepare a traditional St. Joseph’s Table to recreate this feast with specialties such as sfinge, zeppole, breads and fava beans.
There will be an exhibit of historical maps, photos and articles focusing on Cutillo Park in the North End at Boston Harbor Pop-Up Gallery, 226 Causeway Street, from now until July. Please stop by!
Divine Principle LecturesAll of us were deeply inspired by uncle Ashley’s lectures. Each day he explained the meaning of the different points of Family Pledge. This was very helpful to understand how we could apply the Pledge to our daily life. We received powerful messages, many examples and practical advice related to the Principle, including Original Substance of Divine Principle. Also Q&A session helped the participants find answers to their questions. FFWPU Czech Republic, December 28, 2014 to January 1, 2015: 5 Day Winter Workshop for Youth took place at Prague HQ from 28th December to 1st January 2015. We had a total of 13 brothers and sisters between the age of 19 and 29, who came from Romania, Italy, Portugal, Albania, Japan and Czech Republic. Dr. Ashley Crosthwaite (everyone called him Uncle Ashley) from South London was our lecturer. Everyone participated with great enthusiasm hoping to discover God’s Heart, to reflect the year 2014 and to think of their goals for 2015. Here are main highlights from the workshop: New Year’s Eve ChallengeOn new year’s eve, we had a challenge program which was a kind of FR – to go outside and ask people if they could offer something to help homeless people. We visited shops, pubs, hotels, restaurants and apartments. Surprisingly, local people were very generous and they gave us many things: warm sweaters, gloves, shoes, chocolates, cakes, bottles of water, even cash money and a pair of ski! Our bags were filled with these things, we were so grateful and went to the main train station. There, we managed to give out everything we collected to many homeless people directly and we had a deep experience. We also met a NGO group of young people who were serving hot soup to the homeless, so we introduced each other about our activities and worked together. We would definitely like to repeat this action again in the future.Overall, it was great atmosphere during these 5 days, we gained a lot of internal guidance, and had time to share. We also enjoyed sightseeing in Prague and made sushi on New Year’s Eve which was also great fun! It was homely and we want to thank Heavenly Parent and True Parents for all these experiences. Thank you. TestimoniesIn two evenings we heard very touching testimonies from uncle Ashley and Martine Masner, an elder sister and National Leader in Czech Republic. We felt so blessed to be a part of Unification Family.Uncle Ashley also shared about IRFF-UK’s incredible investment in tackling the issues of HIV/AIDS, hygiene and health care in Africa through WAIT project. WAIT membership is increasing in Uganda, Zambia and other countries and a lot of schools are asking IRFF- UK to come and give purity education for young people. Uncle Ashley showed us short videos and we gained great insight into the present situation of Africa.

By FFWPU UK, Mieko Davies (London, UK, December 2016)In 2016 we welcomed Mrs Hiraki to London to deliver two workshops about her work and witnessing method in Los Angeles USA. Two months ago, following the workshops, we started witnessing in University campuses in London. Although we don’t have great results yet, several people who attended the workshops and who watched the workshop DVDs have asked about our progress so far.Last year when working with CARP members, we all felt limitations to develop witnessing. The young people discovered that they need to work with 1st generation in order to be successful. Second generation have limitations to witness to new people because they lack experience and education in this area and need mentoring from older, more parental 1st generation members who understand the spiritual and emotional content of witnessing. Mrs Hiraki’s successful method of witnessing involves parent and child witnessing together. We go to Greenwich University on the same day at the same time every week during term time. This regular commitment is so important for spiritual reasons, so we go every Monday for three hours in the afternoon. In the beginning, I went by myself but now there a four-regular people witnessing together – three 1st generation members and one second generation. At first I thought it would be difficult to start this witnessing project in the UK because Mrs Hiraki and other sisters made a lot of conditions in LA in order to be successful. To my surprise, it was easy to witness and bring people. I felt we could inherit Mrs Hiraki’s victorious foundation. When I started, we found new guests every day and at least one person would read the DP Introduction together with us. Now we have 3 or 4 regular guests. We invite them to the University café where we sit at tables with our books and we read and discuss together. We are working as a team so we all take care of one another’s guests and the guests get to know each of us.One sister has been witnessing continuously for several years but with very little result. She only ever had one guest who received Principle lectures. Now she has a lot of hope because she has regular guests. One brother whose wife died last year has a small daughter and personal health problems. He has a full-time job. All these things create a great deal of pressure for him but he is determined to come witnessing every week for at least three hours. One 2nd gen. went to Africa twice this year and gave DP lectures to African CARP members and helped with the International ILC in Zambia. He could recognize True Parents’ providence and that it is meaningful to witness and introduce Divine Principle and True Parents to young people. He is witnessing with us most weeks. Also, there are members joining us from abroad to experience our method of witnessing. We gain some extra help and they gain experience to take home with them. One sister regularly comes from France because she has a guest and wants to meet her.Our goal is to establish CARP at the University and educate the guests to become future leaders. We know that any witnessing is valuable because it is a frontline activity. This is the best way to educate ourselves and the best way to grow spiritually. Through the rebirth of our guests and seeing them change we can understand the power of the Principle and our trust in God and True Parents. We can meet God and True Parents. Please contact me if you would like to join us or would like a copy of the workshop DVDs (Japanese or English).
Chamillionaire (Image: Instagram/James Nwobu) Oh, the parties—there were so many parties. I had to check in with myself like, “Am I at SXSW, or nah?” Lyft had a party, there was a party at the host hotel and a party at John Colins Lounge, and two, I repeat two, official after-parties hosted by Toasted Life. The other one was so sold out that they had to create a part deux. This conference had too much sauce. Almost immediately, I started seeing celebs who were beyond approachable. Kehlani floated around the vendor station for a while as people stopped her for pics. Chamillionaire had very long, detailed conversations with attendees on some supernormal, “I’m just chillin’” type of vibes. When I spoke to him briefly, he was like, “I need to swing by this engineer track and recruit some folks.” Indeed.Jesse Williams came Day 2 and launched his new app ‘Blebrity’ aka Black Celebrity; he proceeded to play the largest, blackest trivia game on the planet to a crowd of 2,000 people. After you entered the building, you were immediately hit with swag―you get a backpack, you get a backpack, you get a backpack! People Vendors Just when we thought last year’s AfroTech took the cake, this year Blavity came even stronger with a whole lot more celebs, people, and fun. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen this many black folks in San Francisco, center-focused around one location. Food Trucks Parties These were the blackest food trucks I’ve ever seen, from soul food to Caribbean. I opted for the soul food plate, which consisted of macaroni and cheese, collard greens, and a chicken sandwich. Vibes The lounge stations were backdropped by DJs and there were friends everywhere, and even if they weren’t friends, they became friends. It was like an HBCU homecoming, or so I’ve heard. I went to a private Jesuit university, but I digress.Let me not forget to mention that Bozoma Saint John vibed out to Cardi B and highlighted her leadership capabilities. Yaaaassss! Come through Bodak Yellow. Send us the word. Once the conference started, Blavity CEO Morgan DeBaun greeted the audience. Then, almost immediately, everyone was broken into tracks that consisted of engineering, marketing, and entrepreneurship. I headed down to marketing to see what was poppin’ and was asked by track host Everette Taylor to participate in a game of “Marketing Family Feud.” Our team lost promptly by way of my answer. Sorry, guys. After leaving the track, I began to roam around. One thing I noticed was every tech vendor had a photo station, so I stopped at Netflix, Twitter, and WeWork and got my ‘gram game up. Not to mention, Facebook had it poppin’ with the Oculus specs.AfroTech Photo Booth (Image: Twitter) be_ixf; php_sdk; php_sdk_1.4.18 https://www.blackenterprise.com/afrotech-another-woke-lituation/ https://www.blackenterprise.com/afrotech-another-woke-lituation/
Editor’s Note: Since the publish date of this article, news broke that 50 Cents never owned or invested in Bitcon. While others are complaining about the fluctuating prices, 50 Cent is sitting pretty from his early bitcoin investments. According to TMZ, 50 Cent has made a staggering 7 million times his initial investment. In reference to the investment, he quotes on his Instagram, “Not Bad for a kid from South Side, I’m so proud of me.”How did he have the wherewithal to make the investment? Well, he took a risk. Instead of only accepting cash for his album, Animal Ambition, he took payments in the form of bitcoin, which was then valued at around $662 per bitcoin. It currently fluctuates around the $10,000 mark per coin. The site reported that Animal Ambition pulled in about 700 bitcoin in sales … over $400K. He never touched it and the value kept going up. Based on today’s value, it is believed that 50 is holding approximately $7 million and $8.5 million in value.Additionally, a lot of other celebs have become engaged in the crypto world. Nipsey Hustle invested in an Amsterdam-based cryptocurrency company, Follow Coin; T.I. join FLiK, an end-to-end entertainment ecosystem that allows for creative projects to be funded, filmed, distributed, and paid for all within the FLiK framework, and Nas invested in the leading cryptocurrency exchange platform, Coinbase.“[Bitcoin] will evolve into an industry as big, if not bigger, than the internet. My man Ben Horowitz really opened my eyes to that point. This isn’t of the internet age, bitcoin is its own age,” Nas told popular cryptocurrency site Coindesk. “Obviously challenges will arise from a security and privacy perspective, but the internet was the same way 20 years ago,” he continued. We can’t all be 50, Nas, or T.I. but, it’s not too late to get in the game. The value has risen as high as $19,000 and with the concept still being extremely new, who knows where it will land. Additionally, as we stated before, there is a whole new market of coins out there but, as with all investments, be sure to do your research and only invest what you can afford to lose. Myanmar Liquor Association urges stricter control over grey market The Myanmar Liquor Association (MLA) released a statement last Wednesday urging the government to tackle the grey market and implement more transparent regulations for the valuation of liquor imports. “The MLA has always taken the stand that it is here to promote the local liquor industry. We have not objected to any business that wishes to start up in Myanmar, provided they set up their processing or manufacturing factilities in our country. If they import the products it should be done so that the local manufacturers are not penalised,” said U Soe Lwin, president of MLA. The association warned that the relaxation on the ban does not tackle the grey market where illegal trading is conducted resulting in revenue and duties lost for the government. “The main problem we see with the relaxation of the importation policy is that it does not address the “grey market” situation where the wines are smuggled through our border areas and they are not taxed and government revenue is not paid. The situation needs to be equalised and formalised so that the market is fair towards the local manufacturers [who are paying taxes and dues].” pointed out U Win Thaw, the secretariat of MLA. The local liquor manufacturers pay more than K180 billion towards taxes and other government levies every year, the statement said. The non-payment of the revenue is estimated that as much as a fifth is lost in unpaid taxes every year in “wine grey market” activities, it continued. “Big international players have very deep pockets and can create situations where the local producers are put into a disadvantage. We urge that the government give due consideration to the local industry and create a level business situation where we can all compete in a fair and just playing field,” said U Htay Lwin, MLA general secretary. Kyaw Soe Htet 30 Jul 2019 The statement also provided a clarification that MLA does not object to the importation of liquor if there is a “level playing field” for the local manufacturers. Aung Htay Hlaing/The Myanmar Times MLA urged the government to look into the illegal market and assist the local industry in competing effectively through equal taxation rules for both local and international manufacturers. Myanmar’s liquor and alcohol industry has long been mired in accusations of protectionism. U Thein Sein administration permitted the import of wines in late 2015, but only hotels and duty-free outlets have been allowed to import spirits and beer. The ban on alcohol imports has resulted in massive quantities of foreign alcohol being smuggled into Myanmar, fuelling illicit trade. Customs department data suggests that 1.3 million litres of distilled spirits valued at almost US$8 million were legally imported in 2017-18. The black market is estimated to be worth several hundred million dollars annually. Members of the business community say that the new Competition Commission should look into the restriction on the import of spirits which are not in the consumers’ interest. Commerce ministry assistant secretary U Khin Maung Lwin last month told The Myanmar Times that the ministry is drafting a bill allowing the import of foreign spirits. This story has been updated.
