“He certainly did the grand houses of the 1980s, and nobody did it better,” said Bunny Williams, the interior designer who, like Mr. Easton, is an alumna of Parish-Hadley, the Kennedy- and post-Kennedy-era design firm that taught new money to look old and old money to look fresh. “But most of his work wasn’t published, because he worked for very private people. But he was a classicist at heart. In 1967, Parish-Hadley hired him as a senior designer. He started his own firm in 1972, and by the next decade, his work, along with that of Mark Hampton and Mario Buatta, would become emblematic of the English-style opulence that defined the 1980s. Speaking of his former client, Ms. Kluge, Mr. Easton told Town & Country in 2011: “I think she was searching for pleasure in life. The old Roman carpe diem. She was having a good time. I’m not protecting her. I’m just saying she has a view like that, and I think it’s a good and healthy one.” Yet Mr. Easton, who had a deep knowledge of and abiding love for Regency furniture, Roman statuary, Delft pottery and Chinese antiquities, was not really an impresario of glitz and bling. His tastes were disciplined, and he did not seek the spotlight. Even for its time, at the height of the go-go Reagan years, Albemarle House was considered over the top.“Albemarle House really threw down the gauntlet during the roaring ’80s,” said Stephen Drucker, former editor in chief of House Beautiful and Town & Country magazines. A grass-fed cattle operation was located on the ranch, less than a mile from the spinach field, the report says. Investigators found evidence of wild pigs in and around the cattle, growing, and irrigation well areas. San Benito County farm citedDuring the investigation, federal and California officials found the outbreak strain in 13 bags of Dole brand baby spinach and traced the contaminated products to an Aug 15 production run at a Natural Selection Foods facility in San Juan Bautista, Calif., according to the FDA report. Testing at the facility found no samples that matched the outbreak strain. Mandatory oversight?Acheson said the FDA is holding three hearings on issues surrounding tainted produce. He said though good agricultural practices and marketing agreements are the best ways to keep E coli out of produce in the short term, information may come out of the hearings that could build a case for mandatory federal oversight. The outbreak, which occurred in early fall, sickened 205 people and caused three deaths. The spinach grower was marketing products for conventional sale, but the field was being changed into an organic growing area, the report said. Jeff Farrar, food and drug chief of the California Department of Health Services (CDHS), said at a press conference today that the fertilizer used on the field was heat-treated chicken manure pellets. Food handlers and producers who join the CFDA marketing agreements vow to accept products only from farmers that follow specific food safety procedures. Products certified by state-authorized inspectors and grown with good agricultural practices can carry an official seal to assure consumers. Investigators traced the product code to four fields in Monterey and San Benito counties, the report says. Though E coli O157:H7 was found in environmental samples on all of the farms, samples that matched the outbreak strain were limited to one farm: the Paicines Ranch in San Benito County. Kevin Reilly, deputy director for prevention services at the CDHS, said that though the 6-month investigation wasn’t able to determine how the E coli got onto the spinach, it was still a success. “This is the first time we’ve found a clear link between an individual with a contaminated product and taken that link down to the farm level,” he said. “In real time, we saw evidence of some of the risk factors coming to fruition.” About 90% of California’s fresh produce companies have expressed an interest in joining the marketing agreement, the details of which are still being formulated, Reilly said. “Industry self-regulation seldom protects consumers and often provides industry with cover when contamination occurs,” she said in her statement. “Simply put, if the leafy green industry ever hopes to regain consumer trust, it must be regulated by an authority other than itself.” The multifaceted problems identified by the investigation point to an urgent need for more research on the microbial ecology of E coli, said David Acheson, MD, chief medical officer for the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. “We need to find out how the bugs get onto the produce in the first place and how we can prevent that from happening in the future,” he said. Apr 10, 2007 (CIDRAP News) The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently proposed rules that would relax some labeling restrictions on irradiated foods and invited the public to comment. Oct 2006 FDA statement on E coli outbreak However, in an Apr 4 notice published in the Federal Register, the FDA proposed that only foods that are “materially changed” by irradiation be required to carry the radura logo and the term “irradiated.” The FDA defines a material change as an alteration in a food’s characteristics caused by irradiation, such as extended shelf-life in bananas or changes in color, texture, or taste that exceed the normal range of variability for the food. The proposed rule change would also allow companies to petition the FDA for permission to use alternative terms for irradiation and would permit firms to use the term “pasteurized” instead of “irradiated” if the process they use meets federal criteria for pasteurization. “It is possible that some manufacturers not currently using irradiation as a safety tool (because of the current labeling requirement) may opt to start using irradiation in order to enhance the safety of their products,” the FDA notice states. Some consumer groups, such as Public Citizen, strongly oppose food irradiation because they are suspicious about its effects and believe food producers will use it as a substitute for more traditional food safety measures. The bill broadened the definition of pasteurization to include any safe process that is at least as protective as pasteurization and is reasonably certain to kill the most resistant pathogens likely to occur in the food. The legislation also directed the FDA to review its regulations on labeling of irradiated foods, receive public comments, and then revise the regulations “as appropriate.” The 2002 farm bill specified that, until the issuance of new rules, anyone could petition the FDA for permission to change the labeling of an irradiated food, provided that the change “is not false or misleading in any material respect.” The FDA’s Federal Register notice says that the agency has not received any petitions from companies requesting the use of alternative labeling for their irradiated products. Currently, few foods are irradiated. Though several major health and science organizations, such as the World Health Organization and Infectious Diseases Society of America, have endorsed food irradiation as safe, US consumers have been slow to warm to irradiated foods. The FDA says in the notice that it was unclear how many products could be marketed without “irradiation” on the label if its proposal is adopted, because labeling requirements cannot be made in advance for all products. The problems in the Peanut Corp. of America’s (PCA’s) Plainview, Tex., plant are detailed in a seven-page inspection report posted online yesterday by the FDA. The Plainview plant was the second of two PCA facilities tied to the outbreak, which involves at least 677 illnesses in 45 states. The Plainview plant blanched, split, granulated, and roasted peanuts, according to the FDA. After the discovery of unsanitary conditions there, Texas officials on Feb 12 ordered PCA to shut the plan down and recall all products made there. PCA filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Feb 13 and a week later said the filing barred it from communicating with customers. As a result, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and the FDA are collaborating to handle the recall, according to Sebastian Cianci, an FDA spokesman. Cianci said all products made at the Plainview plant since Jan 1, 2007, are subject to a Class I recall, meaning consuming the products could lead to serious health problems. Products made at the plant before 2007 are subject only to a “market withdrawal,” a classification the agency uses when a product has a minor violation that would not trigger FDA legal action, he said. But in February, the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium was found in products from the Texas plant. The total number of products recalled because of the current outbreak stood at 3,076 today, according to the FDA. The loan repayment period is 10 years, and no later than October 31.10.2027, 4,20. year, with a variable regular interest rate of XNUMX% per annum.After last year’s renovation of the Medora Auri Family Beach Resort hotel, in which they invested more than 15 million euros, in 2018 Medora plans to continue investing in the two remaining hotels and camps.
