Neil McArthur – ‘The race is on for the industry to know its customers’

first_img UKGC hails ‘delivered efficiencies’ of its revamped licence maintenance service  August 20, 2020 Related Articles Submit StumbleUpon Speaking at the UK Gambling Commission’s ‘Raising Standards Conference’  hosted at the ICC in Birmingham, UKGC Chief Executive Neil McArthur states that all industry stakeholders have to improve operational standards and cooperation in order to ‘know their customers better’.McArthur spoke to an audience of 170 executives from 100 gambling businesses, addressing public/political concerns during a disruptive year in which the UK gambling sector has generated national headlines following a number of compliance failures.McArthur told the betting executives that their businesses should look to collaborate and focus on solving three core areas of improvement: –Understanding the early signs of problem-gambling being developed by customersImproving staff training on interaction with problem gamblingRebuilding public trust by changing advertising strategies. The UKGC chief executive warns industry leadership to act fast on the above directives, which McArthur states have to be implemented across all levels of betting/gambling’s management structure.“This is a call to action to join the race to the top,” he said. “A race to put your customers, their enjoyment and their safety at the top of the agenda for your management meetings, your board meetings and meetings with your investors.“A race to approach the minimum requirements we impose as exactly that: minimums not maximums. A race to look for real solutions to the public health issue of gambling-related harm.”In his speech, McArthur recognises that industry incumbents have had to adapt to changing conditions and further regulatory demands imposed by the government. However, McArthur states that the tougher operational requirements are necessary for Britain to become the fairest and safest gambling jurisdiction in the world – the guiding principle of the UKGC as a regulatory organisation.“I want consumers in Britain to be able to enjoy the fairest and safest gambling in the world… and to achieve my aims I need your support: I need you to work together to make sure you are the best – the fairest, safest – gambling operators in the world.”__________________Read Neil McArthur full ‘Raising Standards Conference’  speech. Squeezing the Price on Passivhaus

first_imgAs delighted as they might be about the performance of a house that meets Passivhaus standards, prospective homebuyers interested in such a home have been conditioned to expect a bit of sticker shock. One of most heavily publicized Passivhaus projects in North America, after all, was Austria House, a 3,000-sq.-ft. multiuse building in Whistler, British Columbia, that, at just over $400 per square foot, is designed as a showcase for energy efficient construction materials from Austria. And while most people recognize that Austria House, which served as the Austrian Olympic Committee’s communications center during the Winter Olympics, is an extreme example, it’s still reassuring to learn that residential builders are tackling the rigors of the Passivhaus standard for far less money. A case in point is the 1,500-sq.-ft. prototype home being constructed in Belfast, Maine, by local builder G•O Logic. Construction costs for this home, which is scheduled for completion this spring and is aiming for LEED for Homes Platinum certification as well as certification by Passive House Institute U.S., are expected to be about $150 per square foot.A software solutionAs noted in a recent blog post by Residential Architect magazine, the prototype’s design innovations include a shallow foundation isolated from the earth by rigid insulation and the use of Passivhaus Planning Package software to model various building shell configurations and mechanical systems, which eliminated the need for a mechanical engineer. The 6-in.-thick SIPs used on the exterior walls, the magazine points out, arrived at the site precut and ready to lift into place. The builder says that the house, once completed, will be rented to a local family, open for tours on a limited basis, and monitored over a two-year period to verify its energy use targets, which include an annual energy consumption target of 120 kWh per square meter. The house is also being offered in 1,200-sq.-ft. and 1,700-sq.-ft. versions.G•O Logic, in fact, is no stranger to projects designed to merge energy efficiency and affordability. The builder has also designed 30 energy efficient homes for the Belfast Cohousing & Ecovillage, whose residents will own their homes but share community land and buildings. The homes will range in size from 440 to 1300 sq. ft., with prices ranging from about $140,000 to $270,000.last_img read more

Smart home device adoption sees “big uptick” according to new study

first_imgRelated Posts David Curry Smart home device installations seen a “big uptick” in 2016, with refrigerators, washers, and smoke detectors seeing year-on-year growth of over 250 percent. That’s according to a new study published by PlumChoice, an Internet of Things (IoT) technical service provider and Z-Wave Alliance, a consortium of companies deploying Z-Wave technologies, called 2016: Year of the Smart Device.See Also: Amazon makes it even cheaper for Alexa developers to use AWSA consumer survey published in the report said 52 percent of respondents plan to buy a smart home device in the next two years. Out of those that already own a smart device, 84 percent may purchase another. For consumers that own more than four smart home devices, interoperability becomes a key factor when purchasing a device. Even on the consumer side, the lack of standardization makes it hard for non-tech savvy people to confidently purchase smart home devices.Expectations have been rising for a yearExpectations for services and support rose in 2016, as consumers demand more from device manufacturers. It comes after a few high-profile device manufacturers have ended support for devices early.“The smart home industry is thriving, and many companies are recognizing that their success is dependent on a seamless consumer user experience,” said Noelani McGadden, vice president of IoT at PlumChoice. “Last year was a pivotal year for the smart home industry, with the number of people who own a smart device increasing by a staggering 259 percent. As smart home device adoption continues to grow, brands must cater to consumers who are expecting support services as part of their purchase, and at the very least provide installation support.”The amount of people across the U.S. who are trying to make their house “smart” is still low, but it is growing, as the report shows. To make smart home devices as ubiquitous as the mobile phone, however, manufacturers, developers, and system providers must settle on a standard and promote good corporate behavior, to avoid early distrust. Three Premiere Pro CC Shortcuts You Shouldn’t Edit Without

first_imgThese simple shortcuts can save you a TON of time in your edit bay. Take the time to integrate them into your editing workflow.Keyboard shortcuts are the key to faster editing. The more you memorize the faster and more fluid an editor you’ll become. The beauty of being able to fully customize the keyboard shortcuts in Premiere Pro CC is that each editor can piece together a set of shortcuts that fit them like a glove. There are some shortcuts that are not mapped to any particular keys in the default keyboard shortcut settings. To find out what a particular keyboard shortcut might be mapped to (and to remap it) simply navigate to Premiere Pro > Keyboard Shortcuts. A new window will open with a search box to jump to a particular keyboard shortcut. Click on the drop down menu at the top of the keyboard shortcut’s window to apply a layout preset from either Premiere Pro, Avid or Final Cut Pro 7, if you’re used to a particular set of keystrokes. I love that Adobe has a ‘come-as-you-are’ philosophy to editors and their keyboard shortcuts – a stark contrast to Avid’s limited keyboard mapping abilities.I’ve also previously posted 5 Keyboard Shortcuts I Can’t Edit Without, which I would wager are also worth adding into your toolset!Time Saving Shortcut #1: Add New TitleI was recently working on a project that involved adding a lot of text elements. I soon discovered that by default Premiere does not have a keyboard shortcut for ‘Add New Title Based On Current Title’.  This is a very handy little function that creates a new title, based on the currently open title, maintaining all the formatting, fonts and text that existed in the previous title. By default a new title in Premiere Pro is mapped to CMD+T. I have my new title mapped to CTRL+T, so I mapped new title based on current title to CTRL+SHIFT+T. For memories sake, I would suggest mapping it to something related to that T keyboard shortcut. Just remember: T for Title.Time Saving Shortcut #2: Toggle TracksAs a Final Cut Pro 7 editor I was used to pasted items appearing on the same tracks as the ones from which they were copied. But because of the way in which copy and pasting works within Premiere Pro CC, in which the activated tracks are far more important to getting things in the right place, mapping some shortcuts to toggling tracks on and off becomes more important. In this case I have mapped Toggle Video Track 1, 2 and 3 to the simple keyboard shortcuts of the 1, 2 and 3 keys. For the audio tracks I have mapped these to ALT+1, ALT+2 etc.  You can find these under the Toggle command in the keyboard shortcut’s search box.Time Saving Shortcut #3: Select Next ClipWhen you are colour grading within Premiere Pro, or adding an other effects to a lot of clips for that matter, it can be very time consuming to have to keep moving the mouse backwards and forwards between selecting a clip with the mouse in the timeline panel (to see it’s parameter settings in the effects panel) and moving back to the effects panel to change a particular parameter. Helpfully (and this time by default) Premiere Pro CC does have a keyboard shortcut for selecting the next and previous clip in the timeline which is CMD+DOWN ARROW and CMD+UP ARROW.You’ll also need to use SHIFT+3 and SHIFT+5 to switch between activating the timeline and the effects panels. The most useful implementation of this shortcut is when you’re checking through a final grade to make sure each clip has the settings it should, and you want to blast through the timeline, hammering on CMD+DOWN ARROW.Hit the comments section with your favorite time saving shortcuts and share some editing wisdom with the rest of us!last_img read more

Barça was officially launched on TikTok on July 19, the same day that the first team returned for preseason training. Since then, its acceptance among TikTok’s community has been nothing short of spectacular, with an average of over 15,000 new followers every day.Apart from this upward tendency, the club also leads the way in terms of content-related interactions: the Barça account has gathered a total of 7.2 million ‘likes’, which apart from video views is another indicator about the engagement generated with the fans. Short-form football video content on TikTok receives a great reception among users, mainly the Z generation and Millennials.More than the symbolic achievement of reaching a million followers, this reflects the leading position of FC Barcelona in the digital ecosystem of social networks, where it has 340 million followers and is the only sports club to get more than 1,000 million interactions in the 2018/19 season. last_img read more
