Hurteau-Miller Cottage / Kariouk Associates

first_imgPhotographs:  Photolux Studios, Christian LalondeText description provided by the architects. This cottage is designed for a couple with a young son and will serve as a center-point for the gatherings of a greatly extended family and will one day become the family’s primary residence. The challenge was to implement an architectural strategy that breaks down very large programmatic requirements and, as a result, the seeming bigness of the proposed home. The spatial system therefore is conceived as a porous and open ground-floor that supports a solid, “private” volume above. All of the primary living and communal functions, such as the indoor and outdoor living rooms, kitchen and eating area, and sauna open either literally or volumetrically to the surrounding lakeshore. The upper volume, a heavier wooden box clad of Western Red cedar, is cradled by the seemingly delicate armature below and houses spaces that are introverted, namely the son’s bedroom and guest sleeping areas. This dropping of the second-floor volume into the ground-floor level is meant to create spatial interest and intimacy throughout the large, communal areas of the interior while minimizing the house’s overall size from the exterior.Save this picture!ground floor planProject gallerySee allShow lessArchitecture City Guide: Los AngelesArticlesOMA Developing a New Vision for Transit Authority in Hong KongArticles Share CopyAbout this officeKariouk ArchitectsOfficeFollowProductWood#TagsProjectsBuilt ProjectsSelected ProjectsResidential ArchitectureHousesWoodHousesLa PêcheCanadaPublished on January 19, 2011Cite: “Hurteau-Miller Cottage / Kariouk Associates” 19 Jan 2011. Photo credit: diplointernetgovernance.orgDominica has begun the process towards establishing a national Internet Exchange Point (IXP).Internet service providers met this week at a meeting hosted by the National Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (NTRC) to form a task force to guide implementation of the IXP.Ross University School of Medicine and Marpin 2k4 have pledged tangible support to the move, and that is encouraging, said Executive Director of the NTRC Craig Nesty. The IXP will allow internet service providers in Dominica, to transfer internet traffic locally; therefore, reducing the duration and costs of transport.“Ross University has committed to providing us with the basic switching infrastructure and racks that are necessary to start the Internet Exchange Point. Marpin Telecoms has expressed an interest to hosting the internet exchange point,” Nesty disclosed.Internet data leaving Dominica must go through the Internet Exchange Point in Miami, before getting to its destination, making the journey longer and more costly, officials confirmed.“I’m looking forward to when DOMLEC comes on board, so that our electricity costs for internet servers which is the fundamental backbone for promoting an e-based economy, some sort of concessions are provided for that sort of enterprise,” he added. The NTRC says establishing the IXP will be a plus for Dominica and government may have to enact pieces of legislation to finalize it. The amount of internet traffic flowing out of Dominica is unknown.Grenada is the first member of the Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (ECTEL) to implement an IXP.Dominica Vibes Newslast_img read more
