Kirk Herbstreit has really gone out on a limb with his College Football Playoff rankings after the SEC Championship. Not only does he see Georgia football making the field… he thinks the Dawgs could move up.Of course, this would get UGA out of an immediate rematch with Alabama, which is a pragmatic move. But for Herbstreit, it sounds like he actually believes that it is a deserved move. The lead ESPN college football analyst has Georgia at No. 3, Notre Dame at No. 4, and Oklahoma and his alma mater on the outside looking in.Well, @KirkHerbstreit thinks #UGA moves up to No. 3 in the #CFBPlayoff rankings after today. pic.twitter.com/xqQGzJZ7fN— Trent Smallwood (@SmallwoodTrent) December 2, 2018When asked about the controversial call at the end of that clip, Herbstreit said “I don’t get caught up in champions, I get caught up in ‘best.’”Of course, the committee is also tasked with finding the four “best ” teams, but going with two-loss Georgia over a pair of one-loss strong conference champions would be a real limb to go out on.Unsurprisingly, Kirk Herbstreit is catching heat for his Georgia football College Football Playoff stance.Among his critics appear to be two of his fellow former college star quarterbacks in the media, Danny Kanell and Matt Leinart.Neither directly addressed Herbstreit, but he’s clearly the head of the pro-Georgia contingent outside of those in the SEC.“Hey, Let’s lose a game but move up in the rankings.” Says NO ONE!!!! Come on man.— Matt Leinart (@MattLeinartQB) December 2, 2018So dumb that people are pushing for Georgia after a loss.Maybe the more important takeaway is that Bama is beatable.— Danny Kanell (@dannykanell) December 2, 2018They’re not alone:Kirk Herbstreit says Georgia should move UP after a loss?Nah, man.If you want two SEC teams in the #CFBPlayoff, expand it to 8 teams. Simple.— Mitch B. (@MitchBrownTV3) December 2, 2018Kirk Herbstreit really said Georgia should move up to 3 after losing to Alabama. Respect him a lot, but that’s one of the most ridiculous things I’ve heard. Rewarded for losing. Come on!— Patrick Schmidt (@PatrickASchmidt) December 2, 2018Herbstreit saying Georgia should stay top 4 even with a close loss today is wild. They’re in the playoff, the playoff starts today for them— Big Cat (@BarstoolBigCat) December 1, 2018Herbstreit just said Georgia moves UP to #3….my god the world is insane. Why play the games.— CG (@CG2pointO) December 2, 2018Herbstreit just said that Georgia should be number 3 and Notre Dame should fall to 4. What a joke!— Jason Swimmer (@Jswimmer84) December 2, 2018Lot of folks saying Georgia will not drop, hell I just heard Kirk Herbstreit say Georgia should move up to 3rd and move Notre Dame to 4th. Complete total utter joke— Spencer (@skellmarietta) December 2, 2018Two-loss Georgia, non-conference champion Georgia would be setting all kinds of precedents, but the College Football Playoff era is very young, which we can all lose sight of sometimes. This also may be the best argument yet for Playoff expansion. The top six teams all have pretty good cases this year.
